Unique Visitors
The number of distinct individuals who visit your website during a specified time period
Unique Visitors
Unique visitors counts the number of distinct individuals who visit your website during a specific time period, regardless of how many sessions they initiate.
How It's Measured
Unique visitors are identified using:
- Browser fingerprinting
- Device information
- First-party cookies (when available)
- IP address (with limitations)
When these identifiers change (new device, cleared cookies), one person may count as multiple unique visitors.
Unique Visitors vs. Sessions
Example: If Sarah visits your site 3 times on Monday and twice on Tuesday:
- Unique visitors: 1
- Total sessions: 5
Time Periods Matter
The same metrics look different across time periods:
- Daily unique visitors: People who visited that day
- Weekly unique visitors: People who visited that week
- Monthly unique visitors: People who visited that month
Monthly unique visitors will always be ≤ the sum of daily unique visitors for that month.
