Session Duration
The length of time a visitor spends actively engaged with your website in a single session
Session Duration
Session duration is the total time a visitor spends actively engaged with your website during a single visit.
How It's Calculated
Session duration is measured from the first pageview timestamp to the last activity timestamp within the same session.
Important limitation: The time spent on the last page of a session cannot be measured directly (since there's no subsequent page to calculate the difference). This means:
- Single-page sessions typically show 0:00 duration
- All session durations are slightly underestimated
Typical Benchmarks
Average session duration varies by industry:
- Blogs/Content: 2-3 minutes
- E-commerce: 3-4 minutes
- B2B: 2-3 minutes
- SaaS: 3-5 minutes
What It Tells You
Session duration helps evaluate:
- Content quality and relevance
- User engagement level
- Website usability
- Potential issues (very short durations)
Improving Session Duration
